Writing Yourself In

Carolyn Koesters’ interest in journaling began as a young girl when her second grade teacher handed Carolyn her very first notebook, and Carolyn nurtured that early introduction into more than thirty years of journaling experience and a growing collection of over 100 journals. Through her passion for personal writing, she discovered a realm of therapeutic benefits through expressive writing that have been studied and proven to reduce stress and promote feelings of well-being. Journal Therapy, which is defined as the purposeful and intentional use of life-based writing to further therapeutic goals, is one of the Expressive Arts Therapies, such as dance, art, or music therapy.

Carolyn earned her credentials as a Certified Applied Poetry Facilitator in 2006 and has been sharing her passion for and extensive knowledge of personal writing with both beginning writers and life-long journalers alike. Carolyn's poetry and creative writing techniques have been offered in such varied arenas as transitional centers for women, creative writing and yoga retreats, elementary schools, colleges, and even corporations, where she not only encourages journal writing, or “Wordcatching,” as a stress management tool, but also as a guide to slow down and celebrate the joys of everyday life. In Abingdon, she has recently taught art journaling, journal making, and vision board collage, as well as a 13-week Artist's Way course.

Every time we approach the page, our minds may be full, of questions, or conflict, or curiosity, and the act of putting pen to page can calm that busyness.
 
Once we “write ourselves in”, we can more easily reflect on the language we use, the story we are telling ourselves, and possibly, identify any changes we are seeking. Some of the themes covered over the year will include: transition, gratitude, identity, relationships, and memories. Each week, suggested prompts for at-home reflective writing will be offered.

During each class, we will write, have opportunities for discussion, and explore simple but powerful reflective writing exercises. Each class is open for drop in, or take all 11 in the series for a special "perfect attendance" treat!
