Why Yoga

Our Philosophy:

Yoga for every body!

Our optimistic and accepting approach to yoga will greatly benefit even those who thought yoga “wasn’t for them.” That is truly the feeling we want to evoke in all students who walk through Whitetop Yoga’s door. We have created a little oasis in the heart of historic Abingdon to help yogis feel at peace, relax, and rejuvenate their mind and body. Using sustainable building methods, Whitetop Yoga offers students over 1000 square feet of practice space and a sophisticated and reasonable retail space carrying only eco-friendly yoga products and accessories. When we say we offer yoga for everyone, we mean it! Variety is certainly the theme of our class schedule with classes including, but not limited to, gentle and beginner classes, multi-level flow classes, and hot yoga. This schedule, combined with a selection of skilled and highly educated instructors who are truly passionate about yoga allows all levels of practitioners from any background to call Whitetop Yoga their home. If you can breathe, you can practice yoga. So come as you are and give us a try. We’ll be ready when you are.

Yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases. What's more, yoga:

  • Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina
  • Reduces stress and tension
  • Boosts self esteem
  • Improves concentration and creativity
  • Lowers fat
  • Improves circulation
  • Stimulates the immune system
  • Creates sense of well being and calm

Yoga Etiquette:

  • The practice of yoga begins before your class even starts. Please consider these guidelines for creating the best experience for yourself and others:
  • Respect your limits. Acknowledge that your body and mind will feel different every day; listen to what your body tells you and practice in your own time following your own breath.
  • Please remove your shoes before entering the studio; your belongings can be left in the cubbies outside the yoga room. Yoga is best with bare feet and it’s cleaner for the floors, too!
  • There will always be mats and other props available for you to use during class, just make sure you clean them off with our cleaner after class. If you have a regular practice, it may be a good idea to purchase your own yoga mat.
  • Please turn off or silence your cell phone or any other devices before class. If you need your phone with you for emergencies, just let your instructor know.
  • Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes to the start of class so you have time to prepare and settle in. If you need to register for class, make payments etc. please come even sooner so you can begin class on time.
  • Remember to wear comfortable clothing that allows free movement. It’s also a good idea to dress in layers so you can add and remove clothing as your body temperature adjusts through class.
  • Refrain from eating at least 2 hours prior to and 30 minutes after your practice. Drink plenty of water after your practice.
  • Please do not leave during Savasana (final relaxation); it is arguably the most important part of your practice.
  • If you need to leave early from class, please let the instructor know in advance. You can leave all of your props where they are so you can exit the space quietly.
  • Please refrain from wearing any strong perfumes or colognes, many people are sensitive or allergic to these scents and it can become a distraction.
  • Come with a smile!! Yoga can be both serious and light-hearted. As you face small challenges, keep your energy in a positive place so the overall experience is fun and enriching.

Thank you!
